1 About Backpacking

  • There is a big difference between car camping and backpacking. When car camping, you can simply throw all of your gear into the trunk of the car and then pull it out as needed. But when backpacking, everything must be carried in a single trip on your back. If you are new to backpacking, you may want to consult some of the following:

2 Backpacking a Short Distance into Camp

At these destinations it is possible to backpack (not on a paved road) about a quarter mile into a camp and stay overnight. This is far enough for younger group of Scouts to begin learning the skills of backpacking and to feel that they have accomplished something new, but also close enough that it is within the ability of younger Scouts and that trips back to the car can be made as needed. Destinations are not included on this list if more than 2 hour from DFW.
