  • Isle du Bois Unit offers overnight camping within a reasonable distance from DFW, with the ability to incorporate hikes of several miles both into camp and out of camp. If water flow is good, canoes can be put into the river at mile 3.5 from camp and then paddled downstream to Lake Lewisville.
  • Primitive Camping. The park has primitive camping in the Hawthorn and Wild Plum camping areas. Each primitive campsite has a fire ring, lantern post, and picnic table. Wild Plum has nearby chemical toilets. Hawthorn has nearby water and restrooms. A walk of up to 1/4 mile is required. Hawthorn primitive camping area also has two primitive group sites that each has a fire ring, lantern post, and three picnic tables, and each accommodates up to 24 people.
  • Backpacking, Mountain Biking, and River Canoeing. The Hawthorn primitive campground is located near the junction of the the 12.8 mile Greenbelt Unit Trail to the south and the 8.0 mile Jordan Park Trail to the north. This provides several options to hike, backpack, or bike into or out of camp for 3.5, 4.5, 6.8, or 12.8 miles. If water flow is sufficient, you can also canoe for the ten miles from just below Ray Roberts Lake dam downstream to the north end of Lake Lewisville and on into Lake Lewisville itself.
The Greenbelt Unit Trail follows along the Elm Fork of the Trinity River from the north end of Lake Lewisville at Highway 380 (mile 0), continues north to FM 428 (mile 6.0), continues north to FM 455 below the Ray Roberts Lake dam (mile 9.3), and continues northeast into the Isle du Bois Unit near Hawthorn primitive campground (mile 12.8). The Jordan Park Trail then continues north another 4.5 miles from Hawthorn primitive campground to FM 1192. The Jordan Park trail then continues for another 3.5 miles until it dead ends in a loop. The entire length of this multi-use trail system is open to foot traffic, biking, and horses.
There is no potable water anywhere along this trail system except within the Isle du Bois Unit. The three access points for both the river and the two trails are located at FM 455, at FM 428, and at Highway 380.
  • Paved Biking. The park has a 2.2 mile loop trail that is paved with concrete and open to biking. Between Lake Lewisville and Ray Roberts Lake, the gravel multi-use trail along the west side of the river is paralleled by a second concrete trail along the east side of the river. The two cement in the park and the cement trail in the greenbelt do not directly connect. To get from one to the other, you must either use the 3.5 mile natural surfaced multi-use trail or make a short drive.
  • Water Activities. The park is located on the shore of Lake Ray Roberts. Swimming, fishing, boat ramp.
