- LLELA offers overnight camping well within DFW three miles east of Hwy I-35E in Lewisville in a large area shielded from road noise. But it offers plenty to do and is more than just a place you settle for because it is close.
- Primitive Camping. There are 21 verify primitive campsites that hold up to 2 tents and 10 people each. There is also a group campsite that will hold 25-100 people. Both are located close to the river. Portable toilet nearby. Water is available at LLELA, but must be transported to the primitive campsite.
- Geocaching. There are several geocaches on the property. Two Garmin GPS units are available to be checked out at the gatehouse.
- There are four principal trails, each between 1.3 and 2.1 miles long. The Cottonwood Trail (1.3 miles, but another 0.5 miles each way to and from the primitive campsite) is great, passing along the side of Beaver Pond and passing next to the 1870's Minor-Porter Log House (guided tours of the house can be scheduled in advance). Connections and loops on the Cottonwood Trail also provide an opportunity for the simplest of map and compas work.
- Floating on the Beaver Pond Trail. This feature may be unique to North Texas. This is a one mile paddling route for canoers and kayakers on Beaver Pond. Lots of waterfowl, ducks, turtles, etc. Twelve stops at interpretive signs.
- Floating down the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. LLELA is an ideal location to begin a float trip. You can camp overnight at a primitive campsite within sight of the river. Tell your Scouts they can get into the river and launch just as soon as camp is cleaned up. When water flow is good, it takes 1 hour to reach old Business 121, another 2 hours to reach Hebron Parkway (new launch point is closed and under construction in early 2020), and another 2 hours to reach McInnish Park on Sandy Lake Road. You MUST take out at Sandy Lake Road because there is a very dangerous dam just downstream from there, though you can portage and put back in just below the dam. As with all paddling trips, plan ahead for your shuttle arrangements. Lake dam flow information
- Fishing is commonly seen just below the dam.
